DU denies VC 'threatening' legal action over HRD min showcause

Delhi University today dismissed reports that Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh has "threatened" legal action against HRD Ministry for issuing a show-cause notice to him and said that the government has been "requested" to withdraw it.
"Media reports that the VC has threatened legal action are untrue, distorted and mischievous," a spokesman in the Vice Chancellor's office said.
"Without prejudice to his rights to seek legal remedies if the need arises, certainly doesn't mean that he is threatening to take legal action," he added.
The spokesman said that the VC has "humbly requested the show-cause notice to be withdrawn" as he has clearly explained his position on the issues raised by the HRD Ministry.

Sources in the Ministry, on the other hand, said they were "dissatisfied" with Singh's response and are seeking legal opinion to build a "water-tight" case against him.
The Ministry had issued a show-cause notice to Singh on March 17 seeking his reply on the FYUP issue, opening of B.Tech courses without clearance from AICTE and allegations of diversion of funds to the tune of Rs 172 crore meant for OBC students to buy laptops.
In his reply, Singh has argued that necessary sanction were obtained from all statutory bodies for the FYUP. He has also stated that there was no communication regarding the new programme from UGC or the HRD Ministry till the new government came in.

"The annexures attached by him also contain several communications with UGC and HRD Ministry which clearly reveal that they were apprised of FYUP," the spokesman said, adding that the introduction of the programme was not only "duly notified" but also "praised" by the UGC chairman.
