Two people have been held for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 55 lakh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here.
The accused were apprehended yesterday by CISF troops deployed at the road entry 'naka' of Terminal-1 at IGIA.
The duo, identified as Ziaul Haq and Mohammed Hussain, both residents of Chennai, were intercepted after the CISF personnel found them moving suspiciously. A thorough search thereafter of their luggage led to the recovery of 2 gold bars each weighing 1-kg.
"The two were handed over to Customs authorities as they were not able to give a satisfactory reply about their possession of gold bars," said CISF spokesperson Hemendra Singh, adding that the estimated value of the seized gold bars is Rs 55 lakh.
An airport official said it is suspected that the duo was waiting for someone to whom they would have handed over the gold, which was possibly smuggled.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Delhi Metro, a bag containing Rs 2.5 lakh in cash was restored to a man from Rajasthan by CISF personnel after he forgot it at the baggage scanner at Saket station yesterday.
CISF Head Constable Jaswant Rajput found the bag lying unattended and his alertness in the matter has been appreciated, Singh said.
