The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) today claimed that the varsity had called police to prevent teachers from campaigning to gather support for their evaluation boycott, even as two professors began a sit-in outside the vice-chancellor's office.

The teachers' body has been boycotting the evaluation for a month now to protest the new faculty reservation mechanism in universities and a host of other issues.

Two elected members of the Executive Council, Dr Rajesh Jha and Dr A K Bhagi, started a sit-in outside the VC's office, demanding that he meet the DUTA immediately, it said.

The teachers' body denounced the DU administration for the "cowardly act" of calling the police to crack down on DUTA teams campaigning at evaluation centres.

They alleged that college principals and the DU Examination Branch have been forcing ad-hoc and guest teachers to report for evaluation.

"Instead of having dialogue to resolve the crisis, the DU VC has resorted to tactics of intimidation and coercion against the most vulnerable sections of the teaching community," the DUTA alleged.
