The statue of E V Ramasamy Naicker, a respected Dravidian leader popularly known as 'Periyar', at Allithurai Bus stand here was found vandalised Monday, police said.
According to police the walking stick of statue has been broken in two pieces.
Sebastian, who used to write daily message of Periyar in a black board near the statue, was shocked to see that the statue was vandalised and reported the matter to the police.
Inspector Prabharan and other police officials rushed to the spot near Somarasampettai. Police said they have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
The statue was being repaired by local volunteers.
