The EC in a statement said, "...In view of the order of the Supreme Court, the Commission hereby rescinds its announcement of the by-election from 358-Rasara AC in the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh."
The bypoll was necessitated after BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh was disqualified by the UP Governor on the recommendations of state Lokayukta N K Mehrotra.
But the apex court had recently stayed the bypoll on the grounds that a petition challenging the disqualification was still pending in Allahabad High Court.
