Chief Electoral Officer for Gujarat today kicked off a drive to update and correct the existing electoral roll, having more than 4.17 crore registered electors across state, in view of Assembly polls due next year.
Under the Special Summary Revision drive, a draft electoral roll was published today and kept at various civic centres, polling booths and other public places across the state so that registered voters can verify their names.
"Ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections, we want to update our electoral roll for each constituency. This revised roll will be used for elections. Apart from various public places, this list will be available for verification at all the 48,000-odd polling booths across state from today," said Gujarat CEO B B Swain at a press conference here.
As per the draft roll, Gujarat has over 4.17 crore registered voters, including 2.18 crore male, 1.99 crore female and 476 voters of third gender.
Under the drive, which will continue until October 14, applications from new voters will also be accepted at all 48,000 booths, where a Booth Level Officer would remain present with all forms as well as a copy of electoral roll of that area.
"Citizens who have completed 18 years of age as on January 1, 2017, can also register themselves as voters during this drive. In addition, voters can fill up required forms if they do not find their names in the roll or they want to correct or delete their names from the list" said Swain.
As per rules, mere possession of voter ID card does not give people right to exercise their franchise, as it is also mandatory that their name also features in electoral roll on polling day.
To fill up various forms for new registration for correction in existing entries, people can visit polling booths in their respective areas on September 18, September 25 and October 9--all Sundays.
"During the drive, people can also visit our website www.Ceo.Gujarat.Gov.In to for addition, correction or deletion of their names from the draft roll. After this exercise, we will publish the corrected version of electoral roll on January 5, 2017. This roll be used for the election," said Swain.
