A six-month old elephant calf was rescued from a tank with three-foot deep water near a temple in Madukkarai on the outskirts today.
The calf, part of a herd of elephants, has entered the farm in search of food last night and fell into the ground-level tank, forest department sources said.
A farm worker noticed the herd standing near the tank, with calf inside and informed forest department, which sent a team of 20 officials.
After bursting crackers, the officials managed to scare away the herd of elephants and lifted the calf with the help of an earth mover and restored to forest area, they said.
