Singer Emeli Sande said she put off dealing with the pain of her marriage breakdown until she wrote her new single "Hurts."
The "Read All About It" singer's hugely successful debut album "Our Version of Events" earned her two Brit Awards and an invitation to sing for President Barack Obama at the White House.
She took a four-year break from music before returning with new single Hurts which documents the pain she felt after divorcing her childhood sweetheart, marine biologist Adam Gouraguine in 2013. The pair was married for just a year, reported BBC.
"I mean, this was the only relationship I'd ever experienced. So, to finally be without him and without the relationship in my life, it took a lot of adjusting," Emeli said.
She took a long hiatus before reemerging with the emotionally charged new single which she revealed in the new interview was the first time she allowed herself to acknowledge her marriage breakdown.
"Even just a small thing like learning how to handle myself in the real world. It was like a crash course in life," the singer shared. "The shock of it all made me forget about the emotion for a while - put it off, put it off, put it off.
"So 'Hurts' came when I felt a bit more stable and ready to face it. This was the first time I addressed it within myself.
