Encroachments along the Khan river cleared by MP government

The Madhya Pradesh government has begun clearing encroachments along the Khan river, as part of an ambitious Rs 60-crore project aimed at cleaning the 73 km water body, which has practically turned into a drain, it was officially announced here today.
According to a release issued by the MP government, encroachments along the Khan river are being cleared, under the first phase of the project.
A seven kilometre area along the side of river has been cleared of encroachments the release stated, adding that 6,000 encroachments had sprung up near the water body.
Encroachers will be rehabilitated, the release stated.

As part of the project, two water filter plants will be set up on the river to cleanse its waters, the release stated.
Incidentally, in February, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had expressed its concern about the tardy pace of river cleaning and asked for a a monthly plan to the charted out in ordee to hasten the process.
