The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police has arrested a sharpshooter in connection with the killing of Congress leader and former Jharkhand deputy mayor Neeraj Singh and three others.
This is the fourth arrest made by the Uttar Pradesh STF in the case.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF's Varanasi unit yesterday arrested Chandan Singh alias Rohit Singh, a native of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, from near a private school in the cantonment area here, the police said.
A .32 bore pistol, four cartridges, a train ticket and Rs 400 were seized from his possession, they added.
On March 21, Singh, his personal assistant Ashok Yadav, bodyguard Munna Tiwari and driver Gholtu Mahto were gunned down in the Saraidhela police station area of Dhanbad.
The former Dhanbad mayor was returning from the Jharia coal belt in his car when the attack took place.
The shooters had indiscriminately fired at Singh's vehicle from an AK-47 rifle. More than 20 bullet marks were found on the car.
The main accused, Aman Singh, and one of his accomplices, Abhinav Singh, were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh STF from Mirzapur district last month.
On June 23, the STF's Varanasi unit, in a joint operation with the Jharkhand police, had arrested Kurban Ali, a sharpshooter carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, from near the Cantonment railway station in connection with the case.
