Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal has written to Union Minister Maneka Gandhi requesting her to expedite the proceedings of Centre Advisory Committee for rescue and rehabilitation of sex workers.
"A Centre Advisory Committee was formed two years back to check trafficking of women and rescue and rehabilitation of sex workers. However, not a single meeting has taken place so far. The DCW chief has written to Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today to expedite the proceedings of the committee," an official at DCW said.
Maliwal along with two members of the commission-Sarika Chaudhury and Promila Gupta today visited the red light area on Delhi's GB Road and interacted with sex workers.
The DCW Chief has also sought a status report from the Delhi State AIIDS Control Society regarding distribution of condoms in the red light areas.
"During an interaction with the sex-workers at GB road today, it was revealed that the supply of condoms has been disrupted there from quite some time. To resolve this issue, Maliwal has written to the Director of AIDS Control Society seeking a status report on the distribution," the official said.
The Delhi State AIDS Control Society is an autonomous body of Delhi Government. It is the nodal agency responsible for implementing the National AIDS Control Programme in the national capital.
"Delhi Government had also constituted a committee for rehabilitation of sex workers but 25 of its members are yet to be nominated and no meeting has taken place so far. A letter has also been sent to Chief Secretary KK Sharma in this regard," the official said.
