Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today said the construction of power plants in the state should be speeded up in view of the expected spike in demand for power from next year.
"He (Rao) wanted the 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Plants coming up at Damaracharla be completed within three years," a release from the Chief Minister's Office said.
Rao handed over a cheque for Rs 417.16 crore (total expenditure is Rs 20,379 crore) to PSU major BHEL's CMD Atul Sobti for the construction of Damaracharla Yadadri mega power plant, it said.
The construction work of the plant is entrusted to BHEL.
"The chief minister said for transparency and timely completion of the power plants without any delay, the works is entrusted with the Public sector Company BHEL," the release said.
The power demand would increase in Telangana as the state government has decided to supply power for 24 hours from next year and also due to the construction of irrigation projects and industrial development, Rao said.
"We have decided to give 24-hour power supply to farmers from next March. Construction on the Lift Irrigation Schemes is going on. There are several new industries coming up. Need for power in other sectors is also growing up.
"In Telangana by next year, there will be an additional need for 3,500 MWs. Keeping in this mind, we have embarked upon major power plants' construction," he said.
