About 20 families from Bhopal were staying on the roadside of Narasimhanaicken Palayam, some 20 Kms from here and eke their livelihood by manufacturing and selling knives and sickles for house hold use, police said.
A three-member gang, including a woman, stopped their car near the habitat and suddenly got down and took away a one-year old boy, Rohith, who was sleeping, around five am police said.
Even as another man in the car inflicted knife injuries on Suresh, he never loosened his grip and travelled around two kms towards Mettupalayam, they said.
Meanwhile, two-motorcycle born youths, who saw profusely bleeding Suresh latching on the window, chased and stopped in front of the car and caught hold of the driver.
However, another inmate drove away the car, but only to be nabbed by the youths, Nandakumar and Nandu, again, after handing over the first driver to the public.
The gang members have been identified as Siraj Mohideen and Mohammed Ali from Kitchipalayam in Salem and the woman, Poongodi, said to be a prostitute.
Suresh is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Investigation is on whether the gang is part of any child-lifting gang.
