FCI asked to provide timely PDS grains in flood-hit J&K

The government today directed state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) to ensure adequate and timely supply of PDS foodgrains to flood-hit people in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a review meeting taken on this issue, Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told FCI officials to camp at Srinagar and closely monitor availability of foodgrains in the flood affected areas of the state, an official release said.
The officials have also been asked to monitor the situation on a daily basis and take immediate steps to ensure timely availability of foodgrains and if required to rush additional quantity of grains to the affected region, it said.

Currently, there is sufficient foodgrains stock to meet the requirement for about three months in Jammu region and for two months in Kashmir.
Flood water has affected only one godown in Srinagar, having a capacity of 8,330 tonnes. "The actual damage will be known only after the salvaging operations take place, once the water recedes," the statement added.
