Five persons have been arrested and cash and mobile phones recovered from their possession for allegedly placing bet during the India-Australia Twenty-Twenty cricket match, in Kalyanpur area here, police said today.
Based on a tip off, police carried out a raid on a house in Nanakari village. While some bettors fled away from the spot, five of them were apprehended, said SP (Rural) Surendra Tiwari.
The arrested accused have been identified as Manoj Yadav, Vipin Gupta, Ramesh Singh, Anil Kumar and Rohit Sharma. Yadav is the kingpin of the gang. Locals have alleged that Yadav is a local leader of Samajwadi Party. However, police haven't confirmed the same.
