Five killed in lightning strikes

Five persons were killed and two others sustained burn injuries in lightning strikes in Burdwan district today even as the wife of one of the deceased allegedly tried to commit suicide after seeing his body.
Superintendent of Police S M H Mirza said lightning struck in three localities of Raina and Jamalpur police station areas while it was raining there.
All the victims were working in agricultural lands.
Harisadhan Pandit (35) was killed and another person was injured in a lightning strike at Ausara village in Raina.
Pandit's wife was also working in a field nearby. After seeing that her husband was dead, she allegedly consumed poison and is currently admitted in Burdwan Medical College Hospital, Mirza said.
Lightning also struck at Dhuluk and Panchra villages under Jamalpur police station killing two persons in each of the areas.
Jishu Hansda (15) and Dipu Kisku (20) died and another one was injured in Dhuluk, while Anil Malik (65) and Sukumar Khetrapal (26) were killed in Panchra, Mirza said.
The injured was admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
On July 10, nine persons were killed and 5 others injured when lightning struck a temple where they were taking shelter during rain at Shyampur in Howrah district.
