A case has been registered against five Kolkata police personnel from whose custody a suspected HuJI terrorist, being taken to Mumbai, escaped in 2014.
Government Railway Police (GRP) in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district registered an FIR last night. The policemen have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC, Station House Officer (SHO) GRP, Raigarh Ramesh Chandra Sao said.
The police personnel have been identified as SI Ranjan Kumar Panda, Assistant SI Tapas Das and constables Nitish Mandal, Shankar Sapoi and Jagdish Mandal, the official added.
On August 24, 2014, Sheikh Abdul Naeem, an alleged HuJI operative, allegedly jumped off the Howrah-Mumbai Superfast Mail between Kharsiya and Raigarh stations when he was being taken on a protection warrant to Mumbai for a hearing in a case, he said. Naeem was lodged in Kolkata's Dumdum jail.
According to FIR, norms were not followed by Kolkata police in ferrying an accused of serious crimes. Neither the terrorist was handcuffed nor police made strong efforts to catch him after he escaped from the train.
After over two years of investigation, GRP failed to gather any clues on whereabouts of the absconding terrorist but found lapses on part of the police party who was escorting him.
