Railway minister Suresh Prabhu today laid the foundation stone for the Parel suburban terminus and the Panvel coaching complex at Dadar in Central Mumbai.
"Railway has taken up this project to transform Parel railway station here into a terminus and this is a part of our commitment to restructure and rejuvenate the Indian Railway systems in the country," Prabhu said.
Under the project, Central Railway will take up eight different infrastructure works from the first week of June.
According to a railway official, the works, worth Rs 51 crore, include the construction of a terminal platform with cover overshed, widening of Down local line and Up local line platforms to 10 metres, providing a new foot over bridge (FOB) in the middle of the platform connecting East and West to all the platforms.
Parel Terminus is a part of the fifth and sixth line project funded under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-II.
The station needs upgradation in the wake of mushrooming corporate offices in Parel which have led to huge growth in the number of train passengers.
The new coaching complex at Panvel envisages setting up a full-fledged Panvel terminus and a new line from Panvel and Thane stations to the new airport site on the lines of the airport express in New Delhi.
Maharashtra Minister of Transport Divakar Raote, Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar, MPs Kirit Somaiya, Kapil Patil, Hussain Dalvai, Gopal Shetty, Ajay Chaudhari and General Manager of Central Railway, Sunil Kumar Sood along with other senior railway officials were present on the occasion.
