Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Madhurawada M Srinivas said that the mishap occurred due to speeding lorry hitting the car coming from the opposite direction carrying them.
The deceased were identified as a couple S Madhava Rao (55) and his wife S Mohini (45), besides S Dileep (21) and Jagadeesh Goud (25), the police official said adding that severely injured S Nehru and lorry driver Ramana were admitted to the K G Hospital in the city.
However, due to the ongoing road repair work between Madhurawada and Marikavalasa areas on NH-16, National Highway Authority of India authorities had closed one part (two lanes) of the road and allowed vehicles to ply on the other part as well as also placed boards alerting motorists to go slow, he said.
Ignoring these, lorry driver Ramana accelerated the vehicle towards Anandapuram and hit the car, coming from the opposite direction at around 4.45 am, he said.
The condition of those injured is said to be stable, he said.
The police handed over the bodies of the deceased to their relatives after post mortem and registered a case. An investigation is on, he said.
