In a cultural exchange, an international band of French-speaking musicians have joined hands with leading Bangla band singer Surojt Chatterjee and contemporary Baul icon Kartik Das for a new art of fusion.
While rehearsing for the first show of the multicultural musical troupe, Surojit told PTI, "Music has no boundaries. Mosaique (based in Quebec, Saguenay) is a wonderful advertisement of the globalization of Bengali lyrics where the African and Brazilian instruments add life to the beats of 'Kande Sidhu Mon' and likewise."
"We performed in 2006 in Montreal in the international music festival as the only Indian band and NRI Jayanta Guha, the livewire behind the all French-speaking member band of Mosaique, shoed active interest in showcasing our kind of songs to a truly global audience. Not the 'Probasi Bangalis' based in abroad but other nationalities. We are a global community and musical notes can reach out to every heart where dialect becomes non-vocal," Surojit, the cult song creator of 'Baranday Roddur', said.
"The Bengali songs have been phonetically re-adapted by the Mosaique team comprising Elysae Bergeram, on vocals, Mariisol Josee on flute, and Quebec's leading percussionist Joannie Labelle among others.
"At first it becomes a little incomprehensible. The language part. But once you start listening to the tracks, the music and rhythm, you are gradually taken over by the melod. Even without knowing the meaning of the words," she said.
"It will be 'triveni sangam' of diffetent strands - music of the French-Canadian population, of contemporary folk music in Bangla with urban tinge and baul songs in the inaugural show here," Surojit said.
