Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Inspector Kapil Kaushal laid a barricade near Tugal Wal village.
Gangster Ravinder Singh alias Giana, along with his three gang members, was coming to Gurdaspur from Berianwala village in a jeep.
When the police asked them to stop the vehicle, they opened fire on the team.
In a retaliatory fire by the police, Giana sustained bullet injury in his leg, the police said.
Although Giana was arrested, the three other gang members managed to escaped, they said.
SSP Gurdaspur B S Virk said Giana along with notorious gangster Vicky Gounder had allegedly shot dead three rival gangsters - Harpreet Singh, Sulakhan Singh and Happy near Aulakh village on Amritsar Pathankot bypass on April 20.
