The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised structures raised over nullahs, lakes and drains in the city, has so far pulled down as many as 612 such constructions.
Under the drive, which started on September 26, multi-disciplinary demolition and enforcement squads, comprising officials of police, town planning, revenue have been carrying out demolition of illegal constructions, GHMC officials said.
"The GHMC's focus today was on commercial and multi-storey buildings. The drive has been launched in view of the directions given by the state government to demolish illegal structures constructed on nullahs and lakes resulting in submergence of low-lying areas due to rain water. So far 612 illegal structures have been razed," officials said.
At several localities, citizens voluntarily extended their support to the civic body's drive, they claimed.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had last week said that the government will take steps to pull down 28,000 illegal constructions that came up on strom water drains in Hyderabad.
Due to the heavy rains last week, several residential localities and complexes in the city witnessed huge water logging as water could not get drained due to the unauthorised constructions.
