The accused allegedly poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze when she was alone in her house yesterday, the police said.
When the locals noticed the house burning, they tried to rescue the girl but she was charred to death by then, the police said.
A complaint was lodged with the police by the girl's brother.
Both the girl and the accused are residents of the same village and studied at the same college, Nuagaon police station in-charge Inspector Bhawani Shankar Khuntia said adding it was a case of unrequited love.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
