A hardcore member of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army, who was involved in blowing off the head of a 35-year-old woman in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district last month, surrendered before police, a senior police officer said today.
The militant identified as Rakman Marak surrendered before West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh last evening, they said.
Marak, who is part of the GNLA's 'hit squad' from Chokpot, has been handed over to South Garo Hills district police and they have already taken custody where he will face molestation and murder charges.
"We have taken custody of Marak and he will be formally arrested tomorrow as per law," South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Lakador Syiem told PTI.
According to the SP, Marak was also present during the execution of the 35-year-old Josbina M Sangma but denied that he was the one who blew her head off.
A group of four to five militants brutally blew the head off Sangma, claiming her to be a police informer, after she resisted their attempts at molestation and rape.
The woman was pulled out of her home, assaulted, molested and attempts were made to rape her. When she resisted, she was shot at point blank range splitting her head in two, Inspector General of Police G H P Raju had said.
The militants, before dragging the woman outside, locked up her husband and four children inside the house.
