GoM to be asked to look into Airport metro line debt issue

The Urban Development ministry is planning to take up the unresolved issue of the Airport Metro line debt to the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS).
Officials said that the ministry was planning to send a status note to the GoM to keep it in the know of the matter and also to seek guidance from it.
The operations of the Airport metro line have been taken over by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) after Reliance Infra gave them up but the issue pertaining to a approximate debt burden of Rs 2,000 crore remains unresolved.

The DMRC has already written to the UD ministry that it would need financial assistance from the government as the responsibility of paying back the debt falls on it.
Sources said that the DMRC had estimated that if it is required to pay the debt related to the Airport Metro line, its liability would be approximately Rs 1,600 crore.
In the circumstances it did not seem possible that another concessionaire could take over the project, sources added.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had taken over the operations of the Airport line after the concessionaire Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited had communicated that they will not be able to run the services beyond June 30, 2013.
