Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has exhorted the experts to evolve a viable action in strengthening the disaster management and vulnerability reduction strategies for this hilly state to face the challenges of recurring floods, river erosions, landslides, storm, fire and earthquakes.
Inaugurating a two-day national level workshop on disaster management at NERIST yesterday, he expressed his concern over the trail of destruction caused by the monsoon, a Raj Bhawan communique informed here today.
He said the incessant and torrential rain has taken its toll on precious lives including three young lives, caused extensive damage to surface communication, road links and infrastructure and public properties.
Stressing on giving special thrust to disaster prevention, he said that general public at large has a very important role to play in mitigating the suffering.
The state government should ensure adherence to building bye-laws in urban areas and stop blatant de-forestation or else the fury of mother nature would come with full might, he reasoned.
"We need to realize that we live in young zone of Himalayan hills and mountains with very fragile and sensitive soil condition. Hence unplanned urban growth and construction activities must be strictly regulated," he stressed.
Organized by civil engineering and Centre for Management Studies, NERIST, the workshop aimed to develop a perspective plan to negotiate with Arunachal's vulnerability to disasters, the communique added.
