Government agencies must come together and take appropriate measures to clear the oil spill in and around Ennore shoreline in Tamil Nadu, Congress and DMK leaders said today and asserted it is a big threat to marine ecology, environment and fisherman's livelihood.
DMK MP Kanimozhi said fishermen need to be compensated and the environment department should conduct a study to assess the damage caused by the spill in Tamil Nadu.
"Initially the port authorities were in denial. Then after three days, they said there is an oil spill and they are trying to contain it. But the government agencies have not come together to clear up the mess.
"It is a big threat to marine ecology, environment and fisherman's livelihood. The fishermen have to be compensated and environment department has to make a study the damage that has been caused," Kanimozhi said.
Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chaudhary said express methods should be put in place to contain the spill instead of discussing "disillutional" budget in Parliament.
It is a dangerous thing that has happened. Instead of addressing the "disillutional" budget, we have to use "express methods to contain the spill from travelling", she said, adding, "This is going to impact human and marine life."
On January 28, two cargo ships collided resulting in the oil spill. Carcasses of turtles and fish were found along the northern coastline starting from Ennore stretching up to several kilometres.
The mishap and the subsequent seepage of oil also blackened the sea which led to concerns of environmental damage.
Senior officials in Chennai said work is on to clear the oil spill caused due to the collision of two ships and it is expected to be completed soon.
