Govt removes passport no. Provision from seamen's certificate

The government has done away with the requirement of passport number in the certificate of proficiency for seafarers following difficulties faced by them in some African countries in case of variations in numbers.
India has nearly six lakh seafarers.
"Being concerned that in some parts of Africa, especially West Africa it has been represented by the stakeholders that the inspectors of these countries raise objections in case they notice any variance in the passport number mentioned in the seafarers certificate of proficiency," Directorate General of Shipping said.
It said the passport number of candidates does not remain same as each time the passport is renewed or reissued by passport authority a new number is issued.

This is an inconvenience to the seafarers, it said.
