The Centre has a vision to transform the country's steel sector, Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said today.
"The government's long-term vision is to transform the Indian steel sector," Singh said in a release here. The minister stressed on positively responding to the biggest challenge of boosting steel demand and increasing steel consumption.
As per the National Steel Policy 2017, India would more than double the steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030-31, he said.
He said while the steel ministry was working to promote steel usage and spread awareness about the benefits of using steel over other materials, domestic steel makers also needed to walk the extra mile for producing world-class steel.
"India is now the net exporter of steel in quantity terms," he said.
The union steel joint secretary Sunil Barthwal said the ministery was looking at doubling of steel exports from India.
"India is currently exporting seven million tonnes of steel and we need to double this to increase our market presence globally," he said.
Both the minister and the secretary interacted with the SAIL's major customers in the eastern region.
