The Centre will back indigenous innovation in the health sector that will help provide affordable facilities to people, a senior government official said here today.
"Our government will back indigenous research in the health sector through our agencies like Indian Council for Medical Research and others, so that our innovation will be able to provide affordable health-care to our people. Not only that, we can also show our strength to the entire world," said Secretary of Department of Health Research, V M Katoch.
He was speaking while inaugurating "Heart Protection Summit" on cardiac diseases organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
"It's a challenge before us to develop domestic innovation in the health sector. This is our responsibility and we will fulfil it," Katoch said.
Katoch, who is also the Director General in Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), said the government has tried to sort out the loopholes in the sectors and will keep trying to back indigenous vaccines and medicines.
"If we give scientific evidence then we can prove that indigenous medicine is no less, and in fact superior to the imported medicines or vaccines.
"We always think that anything from the foreign land is better. This is the psychology of a common man. This is the tendency amongst the users and doctors. But there is no shortage of innovation in our country. As government, this is our responsibility and we are trying to help them in every evolution," he said.
The programme was attended by city-based doctors and pharmaceutical industrialists.
