The Volcan de Fuego, one of the country's three active volcanoes, is located about 45 kilometres southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It was the volcano's second eruption this year.
"The variable wind from the south could carry ash toward the south of the capital," David de Leon, spokesman for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction, told AFP.
The rumbling 3,763-metre-high (12,345-feet) volcano was pumping out a series of moderate and strong explosions, according to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology.
