Gujarat Assembly today passed a resolution, requesting the state government to make an effective representation to the Centre for getting ascent of the Governor or the President in "specific time" for the bills passed by it.
The resolution, introduced by BJP MLA Ramesh Maheshwari, was strongly opposed by the Congress MLAs, who said it was "an attack on the Constitutional framework of democracy".
Maheshwari, earlier, said, "For the fulfilment of the statutory obligations of welfare state, state government introduces certain legislations in the Assembly and after in-depth discussions and suggestions from the elected representatives of the people bills were passed."
"Unless bills get the ascent from the state Governor it does not take the form of law. And there are many bills which have not yet been approved by the Governor," he added.
He mentioned the bills on public trusts, technology research and management institutions, the one providing 50 per cent reservation to women in local self-governance, bill on compulsory voting, etc, which were either awaiting ascent, or received Governor's ascent after a long time.
"Some of the bills were held up only because there is BJP government and Narendra Modi is the Chief Minister," alleged Minister of State for Parliamentary affairs and Law Pradeepsinh Jadeja.
