Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today said his government wants to scale up solar power generation in the state.
He said the government is encouraging people to install solar power panels on their rooftops for which subsidy will be provided.
Rupani was speaking after launching the 'Solar Rooftop' project, initiated by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), in the city.
"The aim of the project is to scale up solar power generation in the state," he said.
Under the scheme, residential property owners are encouraged to install solar panels on their rooftops to harness the sun's energy.
Rupani said till date the GEDA has received 20,000 applications from all over the state for installation of solar units on rooftops.
The government has allocated Rs 35 crore for installing these units, he said.
The state has also chalked out a subsidy plan to encourage people to harness solar power, which is a renewable source of energy, Rupani said.
"Normally, the cost of setting up a solar unit having 1 kilowatt (kw) load capacity comes around Rs 70,000. We have decided to give Rs 10,000 subsidy for commissioning a unit of 1 kw," the chief minister said.
