Gujarat would set up ten sea water desalination plants along its coastline in the Saurashtra region to address the issue of water shortage, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said today.

Rupani was speaking at Jarakhiya village in Lathi taluka of Amreli district where he inaugurated a lake as part of the water conservation drive being carried out across the state, an official release said.

Addressing a gathering there, Rupani said that the tendering process for the Rs 800-crore sea water desalination plant at Jodiya town of Jamnagar district in Saurashtra region was over and work would begin soon, the release stated.

The Gujarat CM said that ten similar plants would be set up in the times to come, the official release informed.

Rupani stated that his government would also formulate a waste water recycling policy for the use of such water for industrial purposes and gardening.

Rupani said that the month-long "Sujalam Sufalam" water conservation initiative will continue for another three years.

The state government's water conservation drive was launched on May 1 to coincide with the state's Foundation Day.

It aims to increase the state's water conservation capacity to 11,000 lakh cubic feet by dredging lakes, desilting water reservoirs as well as cleaning and repairing dams.
