Gutka seized in Thane; three held

Three persons were today arrested after gutka was seized from their possession during raid at a premises in Nallasopara area of Thane district.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials along with a police team raided the Abdul chawl in Suresh Budhaji Jadhav Nagar of Nallasopara and seized gutka of various brands, FDA, Thane, Joint Commissioner P M Raut said.
A gutka packing machine and packaging material were also seized from the premises, he said.
The three persons were caught red-handed while they were involved in packing operation at the place, he said.
The quantity and value of the seized gutka was being assessed, he said.

Offences under sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273, 179 (refusing to answer public servant authorised to question), 188, 328, 420 (cheating) and 34 of IPC and also sections of Food Safety and Standards Act have been registered against the trio with Valiv police station under Vasai division, the official added.
The sale, manufacture and distribution of gutka is banned under the Food Safety and Regulation (Prohibition) Act.
