Handball association to launch MSL

In an effort to encourage and promote the sport of Handball in India, the Handball Association of Maharashtra in affiliation with with its national counterpart will launch a Maha Super League (MSL) on the lines of Indian Super League and Kabaddi League from next month.
The Maha Super League will commence from February 28 to March 2 in the Indira Gandhi Stadium (Park Stadium), Solapur, Maharashtra, the President of HFI Dr. M Ramasubramani and Secretary General Anandeshwar Pandey told a press conference after the maiden Executive Committee Meeting at JRD Tata Sports Complex here.
Altogether six teams - Mumbai, Solapur, Nagpur, Nasik, Amrawati and Aurangabad - will vie for honours in the MSL, which will also see participation of foreign players and few celebrities, they claimed.
Bollywood actor Esha Deol, also a Handball player, will be the brand ambassador of the MSL.
The representation of foreigners was yet to be decided but it was slated to be around 20 per cent (2 to 3 players) of the total strength of the team, they said.
About the foreign players likely to take part in the MSL, Pandey said the players from countries including Jordan, Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan will take the field.
Currently, India ranked 8th in Asia in the men's section while the women team ranked 7th, he said while expressing confidence that India will certainly improve its performance at International arena.
The HFI President said the federation has decided to organise a South Asian Handball championship in the month of September.
Jammu and Kashmir Handball Association has agreed to host the championship, he said.
Meanwhile, the Indian Handball team was undergoing training at Patiala for the forthcoming SAF Games to be held at Guwahati.
Later, HFI was slated to hold its first Annual General Meeting in the Steel city here later in the day.
