BJP corporator Sumitra Kariya was chosen as the Deputy Mayor. Kariya was the lone candidate eligible for the deputy mayor's post which was reserved for women from SC/ST community.
She represents Suratkal ward in the corporation.
The mayor's post was reserved for general category.
Harinath had won civic elections five times since 1984. Roopa D Bangera, fielded by BJP for the mayoral post, secured 20 votes as against 36 votes won by Harinath.
The MCC has a total of 60 corporators including 35 from Congress and 20 from BJP. The JD(S) has two members while the CPI (M) and SDPI have one each. The MCC also has an independent corporator.
