The Gauhati High Court today asked the Brahmaputra Board to submit a status report on steps taken to protect world's largest river island Majuli from erosion.
Expressing dissatisfaction that the Brahmaputra Board was not taking adequate measures to save Majuli, a division bench comprising Justice T Vaiphai and Justice Manash Ranjan gave the direction after hearing a PIL filed by a resident, Manoj Kumar Bora.
The court directed the Board to submit a report on measures taken for relief and rehabilitation of displaced persons in Majuli.
The PIL alleged that the Board had spent hundreds of crores of rupees, but severe erosion was continuing, reducing the size of the island every year.
