The Delhi High Court today asked all three civic bodies here to give wide publicity to the availability of facilities and procedures to register and obtain birth and death certificates.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the municipal corporations and other authorities in the national capital to take appropriate steps in the interest of public.
The bench issued the direction after East Delhi Municipal Corporation informed it that all empanelled hospitals are authorised to upload the birth/death events in the data base of the EDMC website through their allotted designated login and password.
The corporation took the stand on a woman's plea claiming lack of information by the civic bodies about the process of registration of births and deaths and provisions for the issue of these certificates.
The petitioner's counsel submitted that the common man residing in the area was not aware of the procedure for applying for or obtaining birth and death certificates and the agencies should publicise the same.
Agreeing with the petitioner's contentions, the bench said "This is a fair request. In fact the respondents need to undertake this exercise themselves."
The bench was informed that the copy of the discharge slip of the hospital having the information of the date of birth and name of the parents of the child was sufficient to identify the registered events in the EDMC data base.
