A division bench, comprising Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Sankar Acharya, granted the application for cancellation of bail to Soumya Das, accused in the murder of Sannoi Chatterjee on a plea by the uncle of the deceased.
Chatterjee, a college student and resident of Mahendranagar in North 24 Parganas district, went missing on September 22 last year and his body was recovered from a pond.
Das, who was a friend of Chatterjee, was arrested on the basis of an FIR filed by Ratan Chatterjee, uncle of the deceased.
Alleging lack of progress in investigation, complainant Ratan Chatterjee moved an application for cancellation of bail to Das before the high court.
During the hearing, public prosecutor Manjit Singh submitted that he could not find anything significant against the accused in the case diary and as such did not oppose continuation of bail that had been granted by the lower cour earlier.
While expressing surprise at almost no progress in the case since September 25 last, the division bench cancelled the bail to Das.
The petitioner claimed that investigation into the murder was not being done by the state police allegedly owing to extraneous reasons and sought that the probe be handed over to the central investigating agency.
Justice Dutta has fixed the hearing in the matter on January 27.
