HC closes petitions

Madras High Court today closed the plea filed by a DMK advocate on a resolution passed by Mayor of Vellore Municipal Corporation against Karnataka Special Court Judge John Michael D'Cunha for sentencing the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate wealth case.
The First Bench,comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kinshan Kauland Justice M.M. Sundresh, closed the petition citing compliance reports.
Mayor P Karthiyayani had expressed regret besides publishing her apology through an affidavit and press statements after she was directed by the court to do so.
The Bench also closed another petition pertaining to similar matter in the case of the Samattur Town panchayat President S.K. Chitra as the apology had been published through press Statements
As per the direction of the court earlier, counsel for both parties appeared and submitted compliance report.
The Bench said as the compliance reports have been filed no further orders "are required in the above matter and the writ petitions stand closed."
Judge D'Cunha had on September 27 sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore for amassing wealth disproportionate to known sources of her income. Immediately after the judgement, the Vellore Mayor passed a resolution in the Corporation against D'Cunha.
In a similar case, Samathur Town Panchayat President S K Chitra also filed an affidavit stating that a resolution was passed condemning the Special Judge and having realised the mistake, it was cancelled.
