Madras High Court today issued
notice to Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission on a petition seeking an inquiry into alleged inhuman and barbaric acts by police against a family in Salem over a property dispute.
First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sathish K Agnihotri and Justice M M Sundresh also ordered notice to the police officials of Salem District who were alleged to be involved in the inhuman and barbaric acts.
Petitioner E Saravanan of Salem submitted that 1.69 acre land of his father in Atiyampatti village was sold by one Arumugam, who had been given power of attorney, without their knowledge.
When his family objected to this, the buyer of the land lodged a complaint with police against him, his father and other relatives in June 2013.
He alleged that they were taken to the police station at 1.30 am on June 26, 2013 and kept in nude there and abused. Saravanan's sister was also meted out inhuman treatment.
After coming out on bail, they sent a representation to the SHRC narrating the "inhuman and barbaric" treatment meted to them, but the commission did not even hear them, closed the matter suo motu and directed the Superintendent of Police, Salem to inquire into it.
He sought a direction to quash the SHRC order and consequently direct the commission to conduct an inquiry on his complaint.
