The Allahabad High Court today recalled a two-month-old order whereby the Uttar Pradesh government had been directed to complete the creation of nearly 14,000 courts within a period of three months.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Dilip Gupta passed the judgement on a recall application moved by the state government which had pleaded that creation of such a large number of courts within such a short period of time was "not practically possible".
On July 11, another division bench was told by the state government that requests for the creation of 13,987 courts across Uttar Pradesh were pending following which it was ruled that appropriate action be taken in this direction "without any delay, and in any case, within three months".
The order had been passed on a PIL filed by some law students who claimed to be members of an organisation Human Rights Law Network.
The petitioners had sought the court's intervention in a number of matters relating to safety of women.
Today, the court clubbed the aforesaid PIL with all the PILs filed by people owing allegiance to the Human Rights Law Network and disposed of them with the remark "this course of action is a complete misuse of the process of this court".
