Delhi High Court today asked the city government to explain how a 16-year-old boy died after sustaining injuries while playing at his school.
A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath issued notice to Delhi government and sought its explanation on an affidavit by the next date of hearing on September 16.
The court asked the government to also indicate in its affidavit the medical facilities available at the school-- Government Boys Senior Secondary School (GBSSS), in K Block of Jahangirpuri here--where the incident had occurred.
The court has taken up the issue as a public interest litigation (PIL) on a letter sent by Justice S Muralidhar, who has referred to news reports as per which the boy allegedly died due to lack of timely medical attention.
"I believe this draws attention to the need for protection and enforcement of two inalienable rights in the school setting i.E right to education and right to health," Justice Muralidhar has said in his letter to the Chief Justice.
Delhi government standing counsel Raman Duggal, meanwhile, handed over a note to the court on what had happened that day.
As per the government note, the boy suffered injuries to his throat when he fell from the top of a table while playing inside the classroom in the afternoon of August 3.
Thereafter, he was taken to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital where he was given first-aid and then referred to Sushruta Trauma Centre near ISBT, the government said.
From the trauma centre the boy was referred to Hindu Rao Hospital en route to which he succumbed to his injuries.
