Madras High Court today stayed suspension of six Pondicherry University students in the wake of a ragging complaint by a girl student.
Passing interim orders on a petition by Vidya T Appukuttan and five others challenging the November 1 last order, Justice K K Sasidharan stayed its operation and directed the University Registrar to appear before him on November 28.
The Judge had earlier stayed the suspension of the girl student, a first year student of MA Mass Communication, who had complained of ragging by a senior male student.
The girl and six other students who supported her had been suspended by the university.
Earlier today when the petition came up for hearing, the Judge told the counsel for the six students, who have been on an indefinite fast protesting their suspension, either they should continue with their protest or seek legal remedy.
The counsel submitted in the court in the afternoon that the students have withdrawn their agitation unconditionally and agreed not to resume it till the petition was disposed of.
The judge said it was in the interest of the students as well as the university to resolve the issue at the earliest. There should be a conducive atmosphere in the University for its functioning. He then ordered notice to the Registrar.
