The formation of a low- pressure area over Bay of Bengal on Monday is likely to trigger heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha over the next few days, the meteorological centre here said.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, a low- pressure area has formed over north Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal.
Light rainfall occurred in south Odisha and other areas of the state in the past 36 hours, while moderate shower is expected in the northern as well as the southern parts over the next four days, the centre at Bhubaneswar explained.
Similarly, heavy rainfall is likely to lash parts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Ganjam and Gajapati districts among other areas on Tuesday morning.
One or two places at Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The MeT Centre also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Kandhamal districts till August 8.
Under the impact of the low pressure, squally wind with speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the Odisha coast, the meteorological centre said.
As sea condition is likely to be rough and very rough, the centre advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea on August 8 and 9.
