In one of the biggest seizures of heroin in recent times, eight kg of the drug worth Rs 40 crore in the international market has been recovered from a Nigerian who has been arrested.
Acting on intelligence, the officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) yesterday apprehended Joseph Onyekachukwu from Dwarka area.
During a search operation at his residence, 8 kg of high quality heroin was recovered. The international market price of the seized drug is about Rs 40 crore, a DRI official said.
This is one of the largest seizures of heroin made in Delhi in recent times and will help in busting an international racket involved in smuggling of the drug, he said.
The interrogation revealed that Joseph used to export the heroin concealed in auto parts through air cargo or courier terminal, the official said, adding the DRI officials were trying to get details of consignments sent by him in the past.
During interrogation it was found that Joseph was married to an Indian woman for more than six years and was living in a flat in Dwarka area. Joseph has been sent to judicial custody, he said.
Few weeks back, DRI had busted a domestic gang involved in smuggling and manufacturing of mephedrone worth Rs 30 crore. Mephedrone, a party drug, is also known as meow-meow.
