Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned militant organisation in Meghalaya, was arrested from Kolkata, police said today.
"We were informed that Phyrnailang Swer, a hardcore criminal and a member of the banned outfit was arrested in Kolkata," East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang told PTI.
Swer who escaped from police custody in July last year when he was admitted at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital here had remained elusive until his arrest was confirmed last evening, he said .
"Yesterday, the special task force of Kolkata Police managed to locate his hideout at Chittaranjan Avenue and raided the place where they were able to apprehend him along with his aide Nand Kishore Thakur," Kharkrang said.
Swer was first arrested in August 2004 along with eight others when they formed a gang named Retrieval of Indigenous United Forum (RIUF).
He was placed under state detention Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act and after release from detention worked closely with the HNLC whom he maintained close association with its leaders in Bangladesh.
