The World Petroleum Council selected Houston, America's energy capital, as the host for the 23rd edition of the WPC which will run from December 6-10 in 2020.
Houston edged out Canada's Vancouver on a 25-10 vote to bring the so-called 'Olympics of the oil and gas industry' event to the US for the first time since 1987 -- when Houston last played host.
The event, which is held every three years, is expected to create an economic impact of between USD 60 million and USD 80 million, officials said.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner travelled to Bahrain for the vote and jokingly compared the bid to his three times running for mayor.
Turner emphasised Houston's oil and gas stronghold, as well as the city's diversity -- its population speaks 140 different languages and about 25 per cent of Houstonians are foreign-born.
In June 2014, Russia hosted the 21st World Petroleum Congress in Moscow, while the 22nd edition was held this year in Istanbul.
