HP police forms SIT to probe into minor's rape and murder

The Himachal Pradesh police today constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl, even as protests seeking justice for her continued for the fourth day.
"The SIT has been formed to probe the case. The IG Southern range will head the team while the SP Shimla and the DSP Theog are its members," DGP Somesh Goyal said.
The police are working on all the aspects of the case including scrutiny of call details, he said.
Earlier in the day, the Shimla unit of the BJP submitted a memorandum to the DGP demanding a CBI probe into the case or formation of a SIT to speed up the investigations.

BJP leaders alleged that even after six days, the police have not been able to make any headway in the case and till now no accused has been nabbed.
Local BJP MLA Suresh Bhardwaj said the law and order situation in the state is going from bad to worse.

He claimed that the police had also failed to make any breakthrough in the gruesome murder of a forest guard - Hoshiyar Singh - in Mandi district.
The students' outfit ABVP also demonstrated outside the deputy commissioner's office here for about three hours demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
On July 4, a 16-year-old girl had gone missing when she was returning from school and two days later the police found her body in a forest here.

Initially it was considered as a case of murder by the police, but the post-mortem report confirmed rape, triggering outrage and protest in the area.
